Critiquing is not Editing
Critiquing is not Editing ââ¬Å"Critiquingâ⬠is not ââ¬Å"Editingâ⬠ââ¬Å"Critiquingâ⬠is not ââ¬Å"Editingâ⬠By Maeve Maddox A reader writes about a problem she is having with a friend who is critiquing her manuscripts. . . . whenever I use personification, alliteration, or any sort of figurative language, [the friend] edits it out. We have two very different styles, and Iââ¬â¢m wondering if she is right in editing my work so drastically that it changes the style, or if my style is really far too ââ¬Å"floweryâ⬠, as she puts it. Critiquing is not the same as editing. If the friend is ââ¬Å"editing drastically,â⬠the result is no longer a critique but a rewrite. The chief purpose of a fiction critique is to enable the writer to improve a manuscript by getting rid of unnecessary exposition, character inconsistencies or pointless dialogue. Thoughtful critiques from other writers can help the writer focus on essentials. What exactly is the writerââ¬â¢s purpose? Who is the protagonist? What does the protagonist want? Does each chapter advance the plot? I belong to a writing critique group. Everyone in it has a different style and different preferred genres. We also have various pet peeves relating to grammar, spelling and idiom. However, individual style is something we are very careful about respecting. For one thing, different genres call for different language. For another, every writer must develop a distinctive voice. A writerââ¬â¢s voice may include some flowery language. We respect style, but thatââ¬â¢s not to say that we avoid commenting on language we feel is inappropriate or over the top. We make suggestions, but we donââ¬â¢t presume to edit unless we are asked to. Itââ¬â¢s always up to the author to accept or reject any comments or objections. To the writer being critiqued I say: Its your voice. Its helpful to have others read our work and comment on structure, story line, believabilitythat kind of thing. We do not profit from readers who want to rewrite our work to their own specifications. Critiques should be honest in pointing out plot weaknesses, omissions, and other flaws, but they shouldnââ¬â¢t attempt to recast the authorââ¬â¢s work according to the readerââ¬â¢s vision. In submitting your work for critique itââ¬â¢s a good idea to be specific about the type of feedback you want. If your readerââ¬â¢s comments are consistently hypercritical and make you feel bad, get another reader. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Berenguelas Marriage In 1197, Berenguela was married instead to Alfonso IX of Leon, her dowry including lands were settlement of a conflict between Leon and Castile. In 1198, the Pope excommunicated the couple on grounds of consanguinity. The couple had five children before they dissolved the marriage in 1204 to remove their excommunication. Berenguela moved back to her fathers Castilian court, with her children. Berenguela and Castile When her father, Alfonso VIII, died in 1214, her mother Eleanors grief was so great that Berenguela had to handle the burial of Alfonso. Eleanor died less than a month after her husband did. Berenguela then became regent for her young brother, Enrique (Henry) I. Enrique died in 1217, killed by a falling roof tile. Berenguela, the eldest daughter of Alfonso VIII, renounced her own claim to the throne in favor of her son, Ferdinand III, later to be canonized as Saint Ferdinand. Berenguela and Alfonso IX - Battles Over Succession Berenguelas former husband, Alfonso IX, believed he had the right to rule Castile, and he attacked Berenguela and Ferdinand who won the battle. Berenguela and Alfonso IX also fought over who would succeed Alfonso in Leon. He wanted his daughters by his first wife to be preferred in the succession. Alfonso tried to marry one of these elder daughters to John of Brienne, a French nobleman and crusader who had been named King of Jerusalem. But John selected instead Berenguela of Leon, a daughter of Alfonso by his second wife Berenguela of Castile. Some of their descendents became Englands House of Lancaster. SWOT analysis on Apple business model Apple designed its operations based on superior strategies with a strong focus to gaining competitive benefits and provision of quality services to customers globally (Lynch 2009). In particular, its infrastructural capacity provided its greatest strength, which has significantly contributed to its competitiveness and general performance. Modern gen erational musical production and publishing techniques is critical towards production of superior music with high demand. Variably, its sound management practices have also enhanced its operations compared to its rivals since the administration of its affairs is based on clear ideals and principles. The company has a substantial market share with strong strategic alliance network portfolios, which facilitates its sales and financial prospects for example Nokia and Samsung service providers. Quality production and delivery of service to consumers also forms its major strength in this industry where quality greatly affects performance potentials. Imperatively, the strengths contributed greatly to its sound performance compared to its rivals, which operated on inferior management practices, adopted low quality generational musical infrastructure and poor strategic coordination. Similarly, the companyââ¬â¢s opportunities include increased demand of its services, market expansion, new ventures and diversification capacities, and favorable legislation to regulate the industry effectively. Observation of these opportunities is vital since they hold the organizations continuous competitiveness and performance capacity. The organization also faces various threats and weaknesses, which should be addressed to ensure sustainable growth without providing unwarranted leeway to new entrants (Lynch 2009). The strengths and weaknesses include possible new

It focuses on inequality between men and women in the patriarchal system. In radical feminism theory, there is the social dominance of men as the men are seen to have more power and privileges.AS technology advances, radical feminism is seen to decline (Creager 39). Both the male and the female gender are becoming more liberalized hence the two genders becoming equalized. Socialist feminism focuses on the public and the public sectors of a womanââ¬â¢s life. The theory argues that it is only through working to end the cultural and the economic sources of womenââ¬â¢s oppression that liberation will be achieved. As technology advances, social feminism is declining because women are now seen to engage in activities that men engage in both economically and socially. Conducting a Strategic Management Project Essay Example for Free
Conducting a Strategic Management Project Essay Introduction Shell is one of the worlds leading energy group and petrochemicals companies. It has around102000 employees in more than 100 countries. The objectives of the Shell Group are to engage efficiently, responsibly and profitably in oil, oil products, gas, chemicals and other selected businesses and to participate in the search for and development of other sources of energy to meet evolving customer needs and the worlds growing demand for energy. Mission Statement Shells innovative approach ensures that they are ready to tackle the challenges of new energy futures. 1.1 Topic of investigation having a strategic implication. This report explains the team buildings and teams work in Shell and development of its research work progress within the organization. It also presents suitable analysis of the project management and planning, advisory and project implementation of work. In this report, positive results of theories and its test showed that effective teamwork can lead to a success and achieving critical goals of Shell. It may also be able to gain the sustainability of competitiveness. Moreover, study explains that how team performance can be improved through leadership with project planning to face the upcoming challenges in modern era of business environment Shell operates in. 1.2 The aim, scope and objectives of the project. â⬠¢ How can we improve Shells research study about lubes oil? â⬠¢ What strategy we should adapt for improving Shells research? â⬠¢ How and effective team force can be made for this purpose? The aim of the project is to achieve such team management, technology and resources that meet the new emerging energy challenges. Shell need to adapt such management strategies which will make a strong workforce with experienced and skilful team members. Shell wants to be recognised as a great company-competitive successfully and a force for progress. Shell has a fundamental belief that they can make a difference in the world because of its worth in the global market. A strong consumer proposition has been developed for the brand and embodied in the line World Quality which communicates Shell value-based offering in a precise manner, to its core target audience. The purpose of the advertising in the first instance is to support this strong value proposition and secondly to tailor the m edia solution to the store. 1.3 Justifying the scope, aim and objective. In meeting the energy challenges, the world faces three hard truths. The first is that there has been a step-change in global energy demand, with rapidly developing countries like China and India entering the energy-intensive phase of growth. Even with huge improvements in energy efficiency and substantial growth in renewables, fossil fuels will still be the main element of the energy mix by mid-century. The second hard truth is that easy-to-access oil and gas is in decline. As a result, energy will come increasingly from unconventional sources, such as oil sands. The third hard truth is that the increased burning of fossil fuels especially coal for power generation could mean unacceptably high emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and climate change. Meeting the energy challenge Shell is helping to meet the energy challenge with a broad range of approaches. It uses advanced technologies that can unlock oil and gas in more remote or hostile environments, and new techniques to extend the lives of existing fields. We are increasing production from unconventional sources, including oil sands. Shell helps make the most of cleaner-burning natural gas through our output of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gas to liquids (GTL) products. We are helping to develop second-generation bio fuels that do not compete with food crops; and we are developers of wind and solar power. 1.4 Evaluation of project research methodology. Methodolgy Research Study should be verified by seniors because all research is based on practical data and that data may vary by location of the research and by person. Need to Understand the Hypothesis before research and development. Which department are more feasible and which person is more interested and suitable for that research. Research should be complete on time. Research conduct at same time on different locations 2.1 Identify sources of data and information that will support the aim of the project. For a company like Shell having the right information about the environment, customs, laws and customer needs is of key importance. To gather this information the company will firstly see the law of the country in which it is going to start business, as we are talking about their business in UK the law allows this business. Here in UK there is a high demand it is a rich environment for the company to run their business. Data about this can be obtained by doing surveys and examining the current market i.e. by observing the similar businesses running in the country. Scanning the Environment In this research study, an appropriate approach of environmental scanning is considered in the industrial organisations that are operating in the chemical industry. Different types of information were used in this study. It included general information about the industry and specific about the participating companies. The type of data that was included was; â⬠¢ Formal data that concerns the companys character. â⬠¢ Data that is publicly available, like in annual reports. â⬠¢ Interviews of managers that provided the history and culture of the companies. This information was very important to analyse and research the topic and to see how other companies are operating in the industry. Strauss (1987) emphasizes the usefulness of the case study approach when used with grounded theory. Grounded theory seeks to generate theoretical statements and, ultimately, complex theories based on empirical evidence, although it can be used in different ways and reach various degrees of complexity. The research design framework adopted in this study can be described as a multiple case study, composed according to the theory building structure, as described by Yin (1989), i.e., where the sequence of chapters follow a theory-building logic, and using the grounded theory method of qualitative data analysis. 2.2 Synthesise the data and information for options or alternatives that support the project aims. An effective information infrastructure was implemented to assess the information required in this research, which included technological information, processes and information acquired by people. A rich collection of scientific and technical information was gathered, which was managed by professionals having different backgrounds. However, some companies just provided a consistent picture which was a small collection made up of journals, literature and reports mainly. The information being pervasive is one of the main reasons in having difficulty in accounting for the costs involved in the research as it depends on specific roles and their performance. The data that was collected showed that in medium or large chemical companies data and information was being handled by 50% staff while in smaller companies about 9% staff was involved. The scope of the companies was assessed by their li nks with Research and Development organisations and hoe they collaborate with the regulatory agencies. Strategic change Larger companies like Shell influence the planning adoption but some other factors also interfere with the tendency, for example in what form the organisation is and what is the management style of the organisation. No evidence was found that suggests that the subsector companies should adopt the planning technique as a planning tool. While, the planning offices are also rare and their main duty is to collect the difficult data which is needed by the top management for decision making. The strategic change analysed mainly talked about increasing the quality of the product, which includes mainly improving the conditions of production. Environmental protection was also an issue in some cases there were highly pollutant industries. Globalisation and diversification were also some important strategic changes. Companies that targeted globalization pursued growth in the industry but some companies just secured their positions in the internal market due to the threat of major competitors operating in the main market. Companies which had a little scope of growth adopted specialization. The main target was to improve the product quality. Some companies claimed that they always pursue improving the production quality while other companies admitted that they have to improve the quality of the product to satisfy the EC regulations. 2.3 Determine an option or alternative that supports the project aims. Other way of supporting the project aim is to use theoretical information and implement it directly on the company. Information is like team management theories. Inductive and deductive research can be used to gather information and to move towards the aim. Deductive research Deductive reasoning works from the more general to the more specific. Sometimes this is informally called a top down approach. Conclusion follows logically from premises Inductive research Inductive reasoning works the other way moving from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories. Informally, we sometimes call this a bottom up approach. Conclusion is likely based on premises..It involves a degree of uncertainty. Inductive type based on induction. Data is collected on a subject and researcher tries to develop theory from this data. 3.1 Evaluate the research analysis to enable conclusions to be made. Team Management It is difficult to build a team and maintain good working relationships. However, team members go through a number of development stages to work together effectively in team performance management. Individuals performing well are rewarded while those who are not performing good are motivated. The functions and roles of its members should be recognised by its team. The leader should establish continuous communication lines and set clear goals that are understood. A team that performs well accomplishes projects quickly and with less difficulty, misunderstanding, and divergence. Strategic Objectives Strategic goals or objectives are broad, high level aims, derived from organisations mission statement and purpose, affecting the whole organization (sometimes referred to as corporate aims). These will be: â⬠¢ Long term (time horizon of several years), although they should be monitored regularly (typically annually) and may be revised periodically. â⬠¢ Responsive to external factors such as new competition, changes in global economic conditions, or customer demands. The term strategic denotes a particular focus of the managers planning and decision making responsibilities. Senior mangers focus mostly on why questions, concentrating on the big picture and providing vision and leadership for employees across the whole organisation. Alignment of team performance and corporate goals To achieve the corporate aims it is necessary that the direction of the teams is towards the long term strategic goal. Managers and team leaders have to keep in mind what they need to achieve overall. And hence, to control the teams in such a way that either they are working on long projects or short its all adding up to the final goal. In the case of Shell the main objective of the company is to provide good quality chemicals. To achieve this there has to be a proper direct and control system of the staff working at the stores from the top management to the staff working on the floor. A good communication and understanding will always lead to easy achievement of goals, satisfying the customer at the end. Mangers are supposed to take into account the demand and supply of the products to make sure every product is available on time and then work should be allocated to the subordinates in a proper system to get all the work done systematically and easily. Proper team management should be done by the supervisors and the team leaders. All the staff should be divided into small teams which have to work in different sections. Proper training should be given to all the team members and a standard way of achieving the goal. This performance target should be given to all the team members and should be monitored and reviewed constantly. This standard should be according to the company policy and should be according to health and safety and customer satisfaction oriented. Providing good work at the end of every shift, which is the availability of all the products on time with good customer service. 3.2 Recommend a course of action that achieves the project aim. Skills that need some development â⬠¢ Communicating â⬠¢ Decision-making â⬠¢ Leadership â⬠¢ Prioritizing â⬠¢ Valuing and â⬠¢ Skills need to be achieved. â⬠¢ To respond problems, experiences and opportunities from which to learn. â⬠¢ To generate ideas without constraints of policy or structure or feasibility. â⬠¢ Involving with other people i.e ideas bouncing off them, solving problems as part of a team. â⬠¢ Need to have a limelight/high visibility i.e can chair meetings, lead discussion, and give presentations. â⬠¢ To be engaging myself in short, activities such as business games, competitive teamwork tasks, role playing exercises. Supporting Others â⬠¢ Motivating â⬠¢ Analysing â⬠¢ Delegating â⬠¢ Reporting 3.3 Analyse the impact of the recommendations. Training courses at Shell for career progression. Management Development Programme Includes: â⬠¢ Consumer Legislation â⬠¢ Customer Service â⬠¢ Employment Law â⬠¢ Health and Safety â⬠¢ Human Resource Management â⬠¢ Policies Procedures Opportunity development builds competitive positions by identifying and utilizing opportunities in the environment. Opportunity development is necessary because your existing positions are constantly being degraded by change. Opportunities exist as openings in the environment that allow you to advance your position in the direction of your mission. These openings are usually small, but by taking advantage of the small openings, you eventually position yourself for the big advances you want. Training After the initial audit our ethical trade specialists work with the suppliers to support them through remediation of any issues that are found. Training is offered to suppliers on particular issues and best practice, at regular intervals. Shell is in the process of more than tripling the size of its own ethical trade team that focuses on training and intensive problem solving with its suppliers. These individuals are trained to the highest levels and are equipped to address endemic problems in the supply chain and come up with viable solutions for the suppliers. 4.1 Produce the results of the investigative project. The purpose of this study was to explain the team buildings and teams work in Shell and development of its research work progress within the organization. The main result was in the adoption of the learning and training courses within the company in order to prosper and enhance in the future. Shell is one of the leading companies in the world in the chemical an oil sector and it felt pride in taking these training and development steps in order to move forward and to achieve its project aim as a result of the research program. 4.2 Evaluate the impact of the investigative project The future sustainability of any organization heavily depends on the quality of project management to be able to cope with todays dynamic business environment. There is direct co relation between stake holder business project and the people within the firm. Shell is one of the four largest companies in the UK and has been ranked number one of the top 100 graduate employers in the UK and all over the world. The sustainability of Shell competitive advantage of its brightest people is depending on the successful team work and leadership. The best leaders know how to get others to follow and the best team members know how to follow their leaders. REFRENCES BOOKS: Aguilar, F.J. (1967) Scanning the Business Environment. The Division of Church and Teensââ¬Â¦ Essay -- Essays Papers
The Division of Church and Teensâ⬠¦ It seems in todayââ¬â¢s world every night on the news we see examples of high school aged Americans who are committing crimes and hurting people around them. Whether it is a school shooting, kids being busted for drugs, underage drinking, or vandalism we are seeing more examples of high school aged kids doing things that are severely looked down upon. This problem has not been resolved because we keep seeing it as a continuing issue in the news everyday. With the cutting of extracurricular budgets for schools and other organizations the availability of good programs for high school kids to participate in is declining year by year. Therefore many kids are spending their time doing unconstructive things that may lead to ill-advised behavior. Although there are thousands of explanations for this irrational behavior ranging from violence on TV to the availability of guns, a significant reason is a lack of spiritual values associated with religion and the church. However, to und erstand this reason you must recognize that by referring to spirituality and the church I am encompassing all religions. Nevertheless due to the restrictions on the length of this paper I will use specific examples and not be able to fully explore every religion. Furthermore I will be focusing in general on specific examples occurring in America because they relate better to this essays projected audience. In addition, by asserting my above statement I am also implying that all religions have ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠values and that these values are a possible solution to this increasing problem. Elphaba from ââ¬ÅWickedââ¬Â by Gregory Maguire Essay
Analyze the Main CharacterThe main character named Elphaba, in the novel Wicked, raises the debate to whether evil is inherited genetically or developed by social injustice. Elphaba, having been born with a pale green skin tone and razor sharp teeth was automatically rejected by society at birth. As she grew older she developed a vast knowledge of the world around her which led her desire to be influential towards the greater good. Even though her intentions were genuinely efficacious she was labeled wicked due to the narrow views on eccentricity throughout society. This is the conflict in which Elphaba was to succumb in order to fulfill her desire to better the world. Elphaba was born a munchkinlander to the reverend of a unionist church and the daughter of a wealthy family. Even though she was born to a promising background she was destined for failure due to birth defects. Elphaba was born with green skin and razor sharp teeth because of a green elixir in which her mother ingested in large quantities during the pregnancy. These abnormal traits caused even the narrow minds of her parents to have distaste for her; her parents were afraid of her at first but later learned to love her for she had become an extremely kind and loving person. She was born with a negative connotation to her name which could possibly dampen her future. Despite the constant badgering and scrutinizing due to her irregularities Elphaba developed a mind of phenomenal capacity. Her father spent much time tutoring her in her younger years and teaching her to love knowledge. With this love for knowledge she excelled in public schooling and was accepted with full decoration to attend Shiz University. Wishing to attend Shiz to develop her brain she was soon discovered to be that of a witch with potential to develop amazing powers. She was then lead on by the head mistress madam Morrible to pursue her powers and then later to engage in a meeting with the wizard of Oz. Now, having developed a great magical ability, Elphaba was to meet the wizard who she thought could be able to help her fulfill her desire to better the world. To her surprise, it was revealed that the wizard had no power at allà and with the help of madam Morrible planned to use Elphaba as the power in order to fuel his own dictatorship. Elphaba quickly rejected the wizardsââ¬â¢ proposal and went into hiding promptly. In doing so the wizard persuaded society that she was wicked because of her abnormal looks and that she was capable of destroying their Land of Oz. Society surged against Elphaba killing everyone and everything she ever loved. This drove Elphaba to lose all control and use her divine magical powers to harm the society that rejected her. This could be considered the point in which Elphaba fulfilled her title as ââ¬Å"wicked.â⬠Elphaba was born to abnormal looks with a kind heart but later became wicked because of the cruel behavior of society. If she were only given the chance to prove her intentions she may have succeeded in improving the status of the world. But due to the evil intentions of the wizard her life was thus written as the wickedest of them all.

Marketing Tips 9 Thoughts on How Good Marketing Really Pays Off
Marketing Tips 9 Thoughts on How Good Marketing Really Pays Off Way back in December 2015, I delivered a presentation as part of the LinkedIn Success Summit, organized by Liam Austin, founder of EntrepreneursHQ. Liam followed up with me after that presentation using strategies that can be translated into some great marketing tips. (Spoiler alert: Liam ghostwrote an article by me about how to be ââ¬Å"super likeable on LinkedIn,â⬠the link to which is at the bottom of this blog.) Back to 2015. I gave my presentation, got a slew of LinkedIn connections out of it, and didnââ¬â¢t think much about it after that. I received a few friendly marketing emails from Liam in 2016, including a survey and an invitation to join a Facebook group of attendees from the Summit. In February 2017, Liam wrote to compliment me on my own marketing activities and to check in on how I was doing. Then, more than a year later (just a couple of weeks ago), Liam invited me to make referrals to his ââ¬Å"Ambassador Program,â⬠à an opportunity to promote his daily marketing tips. Despite my overall positive feelings about Liam, I ignored his appeal. And then, suddenly, a message from Liam appeared in my inbox announcing that he that he had written an article in my voice ââ¬â about the presentation I had delivered in 2015! I had multiple reactions to this announcement that have persuaded me to take Liamââ¬â¢s marketing tips seriously:: Wow, this guy does a great job of staying on top of his network. I wish I were that organized. What? He is going to publish an article as if it were written by me? Now I have an editing job to do. Geez, couldnââ¬â¢t you give a girl a little bit of warning? (Reading the blog) I have a serious editing job to do so that I can be comfortable with this articleââ¬â¢s publication. But I kinda like the tone and the overall gist of what Liam got from my presentation. I like that he garnered the theme of taking a risk and putting yourself out there. This is cool! Free publicity that will get me exposure to a list of 50,000 people. I trust that at least 100 and maybe even up to 10,000 of will actually read this article. I wonder what Liamââ¬â¢s open rate is? This will make a great blog! (As Iââ¬â¢m writing the blog) Hmm, maybe I should look at this Ambassador Program after all (she clicks on the link). Oh, this could be useful for someone starting out in marketing. A marketing tip a day might be something some people will want. Okay. Iââ¬â¢ll link to the program in my blog. I should probably read this article to see if he really made the edits I requested. Oh, hmmm, he made some of them but still managed to reinsert some comma splices and phrases I would never use. Oh well. Iââ¬â¢m done fighting this battle. The ideas are mine and most people wonââ¬â¢t notice the errors anyway! (Yes Iââ¬â¢ve gotten a bit resigned over the years.) Iââ¬â¢m glad I have a general policy not to use ghostwriters. I prefer my own true blogs! You might be wondering when Iââ¬â¢m going to give you the link to this famed article, ostensibly written by me. Here it is, along with a little video excerpt from my LinkedIn Summit presentation: How To Become Super Likeable On LinkedIn In case I havenââ¬â¢t made it clear in all my writings and ramblings about LinkedIn, I really do think itââ¬â¢s imperative to ââ¬Å"do youâ⬠on LinkedIn and not sounds like anyone else. Liam agrees and Iââ¬â¢m happy that he did so many of the right things over the years: Namely, reaching out, reaching out, and reaching out, over and over again. I bet his daily marketing tips would help you do the same and enjoy similar success. By the way, the recordings from the LinkedIn Summit are still available, in case they interest you! Whats a Bad SAT Score Nationally and by College
What's a Bad SAT Score Nationally and by College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Have you taken the SAT recently? Are you wondering whether your score is bad? Or maybe you just want to know the score to beat before you take the SAT for the first time. In this article, we'll explain what a bad SAT score is, both in terms of the national averages and the colleges you might be interested in. What's Considered a "Bad" SAT Score Nationally? Looking at the 2018 SAT Total Group annual report, we see that a composite score below 1068 is below average. In terms of the sections, an Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score below 536 is below average, while a Math score below 531 is below average. This means that if you want to be above average nationally, you'll need to beat a 1068 total score. According to the2018 SAT percentiles, any composite score of 920 or lower is in the bottom 25%. In other words, if you score at or below this benchmark, your score is definitely in the low range. (Learnmore about SAT percentile rankings here.) What Do Colleges Think a Low SAT Score Is? While your national rank is important,itââ¬â¢s far more important to think about what your score means in terms of the colleges you want to attend. After all, you take the SAT to get admitted to colleges, so their opinion is ultimately the most important. If youââ¬â¢re above a collegeââ¬â¢s average SAT score range- even if your score seems low nationally- then your admissions chances wonââ¬â¢t be compromised. Conversely, you could have a score that looks good nationally- say, in the 90th percentile (a 1340)- but is far below the ranges of selective colleges, such asthe Ivy League, Stanford, and MIT. As you can see, it'smuch more important to consider SAT scores within thecontext of your target colleges. Now let's explore some score ranges to determine what constitutes a "bad" SAT score at various colleges. Whatââ¬â¢s a Bad SAT Score for the Most Selective Schools? If youââ¬â¢re aiming for the most selective schools in the country- think Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, MIT- pretty much any SAT scores that arenââ¬â¢t considered excellent nationally are seen as low. For example, at Harvard, the SAT middle 50% ranges(i.e., the 25th to 75th percentile scores) are 730-800 for Math and 730-790 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. That's pretty high! Additionally, since highly competitive colleges routinely turn away applicants with scores within their average ranges, itââ¬â¢s safest to aim for an SAT score in the top 50% of admitted student scores- not just to be within the middle 50% range. In fact, being in the lower half of a highly selective collegeââ¬â¢s score ranges can dramatically lower your chances of admission. For example, if the schoolââ¬â¢s normal admission rate is 10% but your SAT score is in the 25thpercentile for that school, your chances of admission are really just 5% or lower. Your SAT composite score should be 1500 or higher (about 750 or higher per section) if you want to be competitive at highly selective schools. Anything below that will significantly lower your chances. Anything below 1400 (about 700 per section) is decidedly low and makes your admission more unlikely. Whatââ¬â¢s a Bad SAT Score for Selective Schools? Once youââ¬â¢re out of the top 15 colleges in the country, a "bad" SAT score for a school is anything below its middle 50% range. We say "bad" not because the score is necessarily bad on a national scale, but because it could lower your chances of admission. To take one example, letââ¬â¢s look at Boston University. BU is a selective school, ranked in the top 50 nationwide. ItsSAT middle 50% score ranges are 660-760 on Math and 640-720 onEBRW. A bad score would be anything below these section score ranges, or roughly anything lower than a 1300 SAT composite. So even though a 1300 is a strong SAT score nationally (in the top 13% of test takers!),you'd need to get at least that scoreto be competitive at BU. What constitutes a "bad" SAT score at a selective school will vary by college, so look up the ranges of schools you're interested in using our guide below. Whatââ¬â¢s a Bad SAT Score for a Local State School? If youââ¬â¢re looking to get into a local university or less competitive school,SAT averages are much more forgiving. For example, letââ¬â¢s look at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Itsmiddle 50% ranges are 510-600 for Math and 490-600 for EBRW. Therefore, for UMass Boston, a composite score around the national average of 1068 on the SAT is definitely within range for admission. In other words, there are many universities that are much more forgiving of an average or just below average SAT score. Look up your local schools below using our guide to figure out what their score ranges are. How to Find a College's SAT Score Ranges We've compiled the SAT score ranges for hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide as well as info on their average GPAs and other admissions data. To find a particular college's SAT score ranges for admission, search for "[School Name] SAT scores site:prepscholar.com": The SAT score ranges page should bethe first or second result: Click the link to get not just that school's SAT score ranges but also its average GPA and admission rate.We even have a tool that allows you to plug in your GPA and SAT/ACT scores to estimate your chance of admission. Here is what our SAT scores page for Stanford looks like: How to Avoid Getting a Bad SAT Score Now that you know what a bad SAT score looks like, what can you do to avoid getting one yourself? First, look up the middle 50% SAT ranges of all colleges you're interested in. By doing that, you can figure out the kind of SAT score you'll need to aim for to be competitive at your target schools. If you want, you can fill out the table below to track the 25th and 75th percentile SAT scores for each school you're thinking of applying to: School EBRW 25th %ile EBRW 75th %ile Math 25th %ile Math 75th %ile Composite 25th %ile Composite 75th %ile If you haven't taken the SAT yet or are planning to retake it, your target SAT score should be the upper bound of the middle 50% range of the most competitive school in your chart. As long as you make that score, you'll be competitive wherever you apply. Even if you miss it by a little bit, you'll likely be well within range for most colleges on your list. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Weââ¬â¢re covered what a bad SAT score might look like. Ethical Challenges Involved in Engineering Essay
Ethical Challenges Involved in Engineering - Essay Example â⬠¢Ã à à Large systems operated by super-intelligent software packages designed and manipulated by the smartest people can lead to disasters if the smart people fail to be ethical. â⬠¢Ã à à Because of the rapid rate of advancement of technology, engineering graduates are literally absolute in their level of technological knowledge almost immediately upon graduation from college. â⬠¢Ã à à Historically, professional engineering licenses were lifetime approval to practice engineering provided that renewal fees were paid in a timely manner as required by the various licensing and regulatory boards and agencies. â⬠¢Ã à à The first specialization to occur was to separate civil engineering from military engineering. â⬠¢Ã à à The purpose of formally recognizing or accrediting certification programs is to provide the engineering profession and the general public with assurance that certification programs do not meet a set of rigorous standards.
